Ophrys sipontensis was described in 1967 by GUMPRECHT as a subspecies of Ophrys sphegodes. Since this description is invalid according to the strict ICBN rules, it has been done again in 1987 by LORENZ and GEMBARDT in the context of their orchid mapping of the Promontorio del Gargano, this time however in the rank of a species.

Ophrys sipontensis is only known from Promontorio del Gargano and the Murge region situated in the region of Bari. Ophrys sipontensis is pollinated by the smaller one of the dark blue carpenter bees, Xylocopa iris, which is pollinator of Ophrys spruneri in Greece, too.
