Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Epipactis  ZINN

Authors:
S.HERTEL:  Stefan Hertel (fl. 2006), German orchid specialist
PRESSER:  Helmut Presser (1958 - ), German teacher and orchid specialist
ZINN:  Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727 - 1759), German physician and botanist

Etymology:
   Epipactis:   Greek plant name
   sanguinea:   blood-red

Epipactis sanguinea which has been described not until 2004 by S.HERTEL und PRESSER from a wood in the Serre San Bruno in Southern Italy is looking similar to Epipactis meridionalis, which is growing at the same place but is in flower a month ealier. Both have often the "bloodstein" on the epichile, that caused the name for Epipactis sanguinea. However Epipactis meridionalis is pollinated by insects for which it has a functional viscidium, while Epipactis sanguinea is self pollinating.
