Etymology: | |||
Epipactis: | Greek plant name | ||
sanguinea: | blood-red | ||
Epipactis sanguinea which has been described not until 2004 by S.HERTEL und PRESSER from a wood in the Serre San Bruno in Southern Italy is looking similar to Epipactis meridionalis, which is growing at the same place but is in flower a month ealier. Both have often the "bloodstein" on the epichile, that caused the name for Epipactis sanguinea. However Epipactis meridionalis is pollinated by insects for which it has a functional viscidium, while Epipactis sanguinea is self pollinating. |
