Ophrys apifera  HUDS.  var. badensis  L.LEWIS & KREUTZ

Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:
   HUDS.:  William Hudson (1730 - 1793), British pharmacist and botanist
   L.LEWIS:  Leslie Lewis, British orchid specialist
   KREUTZ:  Carolus (Carel) Adrianus Johannes Kreutz (1954 - ), Dutch orchid specialist
   L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
   Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   apifera:   bearing bees
   badensis:   from Baden (Southwest Germany)

The variety of the bee orchid with big sepal-like petals but normal drawing on the lip has been called Ophrys apifera var. friburgensis for decades of years, until Helmut BAUMANN proved in 'Die Orchideen Deutschlands' (2005) that this name means a variety with brown blotches on a light yellow lip, i.e. the bee orchid with a decomposed speculum on the lip, which up to now has been called Ophrys botteronii. So the variety mentioned above with normal lip became nameless, and has been described in 2012 as Ophrys apifera var. badensis by LEWIS and KREUTZ in Jour.Eur.Orch 44 (2) since its holotype originates from Freiburg im Breisgau (Baden, SW Germany).
The name Ophrys apifera var. jurana (NEUBERGER) SCHUSTER however shall be an invalidly published name for the shown variety with bigger petals similar to the sepals but normal lip drawing. Ophrys jurana (RUPPERT) NEUBERGER and Ophrys apifera subsp. jurana RUPPERT ex ZIMM. shall not unconditionally have the same meaning as Ophrys apifera var. jurana (NEUBERGER) SCHUSTER but shall have been used for several Bee Orchid varieties in the past, so usage of these names could lead to errors. The following German botanists were the authors of the now invalid names:
   NEUBERGER = Joseph Neuberger (1854-1924)
   RUPPERT = Joseph Ruppert (1864-1935)
   SCHUSTER = Curt Schuster (1860-1935)
   ZIMM. = Albrecht Wilhelm Philipp Zimmermann (1860-1931)
