Etymology:
   Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   penelopeae:   Penelope, Greek legendary figure, who is said to have lived on the Ionian island of Ithaki
 

Ophrys penelopeae from the Ionian Islands has a smaller flower than Ophrys phryganae e.g. from Crete where it is pollinated by Andrena panurgimorpha. Ophrys penelopeae is pollinated by another bee, namely Andrena cinerea. The species has been described in 2014 by Prof. Paulus in Jour.Eur.Orch. 46 (2): 233-304.
