Only recently the actually rather old realization is winning recognition again that there are different distinct clans of the
Lesser Butterfly Orchid in central and northern Europe.
The Lesser Butterfly Orchid shown here, which is the most common clan in Central Europe (and also in southern Europe),
is one with a large stature (30 - 60 cm) and usually a lax inflorescence of relatively large flowers.
The lip is distinctly longer than the lateral sepals. It blooms relatively early.
Plantanthera bifolia subsp. latifolia likes to grow at basic locations (e.g. on lime).
The name Platanthera solstitialis BONNINGH. ex RCHB. 1830 is invalid,
it was published without description and illustration,
and in the past it was used for various Central European Platanthera clans.
