The orchid was decribed by B.+H.BAUMANN in 1984 as subspecies of Ophrys sphegodes. It is named according to the Greek island of Kefallinia, but is wider spread in the region.

As the neighbour species Ophrys exaltata subsp. archipelagi it is pollinated by Colletes cunicularius. Between Southern Dalmatia (Croatia) and Albania there flowing transistions to Ophrys exaltata subsp. archipelagi, which continues to northern direction and is also available in the eastern part of Italy.
