Garganica has been described in 1962 by NELSON as a subspecies of Ophrys sphegodes, but invalidly according to the strict ICBN rules. The married couple DANESCH repeated the description in 1975 validly on material from Promontorio del Gargano in southeastern Italy. Its name is partly misleading, because one can find it in large parts of central and southern Italy, too, as well as in Sicily. As the similar western mediterranean Ophrys garganica subsp. passionis it is pollinated by Andrena pilipes (formerly: carbonaria).
