In Jour.Eur.Orch.34(3) HERTEL (2002) describes a small flowered species from Croatia as Ophrys illyrica, which is in flower in May and June, about a month later than Ophrys tommasinii. Its stigmatic cave is higher and the stigmatic head is laced stronger than that of Ophrys tommasinii. The colour of the labellum is a dark reddish brown, while the labellum of Ophrys tommasinii has a lighter yellowish brown colour. PAULUS (2000) in Ber.Arbeitskrs.Heim.Orchid.17(2) determined Andrena pardellei as pollinator of Ophrys illyrica. The first four images have been taken at an very early site on the croatian island Cres.
In the western part of central Italy there are very similar or the same plants. In Natural.belges 85 (Orchid.17) DELFORGE described this kind of orchids from Monte Appiolo (Latium) as Ophrys ausonia.
