Ophrys panormitana subsp. panormitana is passed for an endemism of Sicily, which has been described after an old name for the city of Palermo already in 1842. Also in other parts of Sicily it's not rare. Ophrys panormitana subsp. panormitana is somewhat earlier in flower than the closely related Ophrys exaltata subsp. exaltata, from which it differs by a usually wider labellum with stronger hairs at the side. The labellum can even be trilobed. There are orchids with green as well as those with coloured perigon. According to PAULUS and GACK (1990 in Jber.naturwiss.Ver.Wuppertal 43) Ophrys panormitana subsp. panormitana is pollinated by the bee Andrena thoracica.
