Ophrys tarentina can be found in the southern Italian provinces Calabria, Basilicata and Apulia (Puglia). The close wreath of brighter hair at the edge of the labellum is striking. Some authors assume a hybridogene origin from the Sicilian Ophrys lunulata and an orchid of the Ophrys sphegodes group. As all relatives of Ophrys lunulata it is pollinated by a mason bee, in this case Osmia tricornis.
