Ophrys tommasinii has been described in April 1851 from the small northern Croatian island Sveti Petar near Lošinj (former Italian name: Lussin) by VISIANI. In Jour.Eur.Orch.34(3) HERTEL (2002) mentions starting of flower in Istria for middle of April. The first four images are showing Ophrys tommasinii from a late site on the Croatian island Cres.
In central Italy there are very similar plants, flowering later in higher altitude. The orchids shown in the second row from approximately 1080 m altitude above Palena in Abruzzo were fading in beginning of june the same time, growing on an eastern exposed slope. It is doubtful whether the Italian orchids are identical with Ophrys tommasinii from former Yugoslavia. Morphologically they are quite similar. But Ophrys tommasinii in former Yugoslavia grows only in lower and climatically favoured biotopes near the coast, and has proofed as very susceptible of frost, while the Italian orchids are growing in sites of high altitude of partly over 1000 meters, and are obviously able to bear cold weather well.
