The lower calyx teeth of species of the Clinopodium menthifolium group have about the double length of the upper ones. Usually two subspecies are differed: Clinopodium menthifolium subsp. menthifolium (= Calamintha sylvaticum subsp. sylvaticum), which also occurs in Central Europe, and Clinopodium menthifolium subsp. ascendens (= Calamintha sylvatica subsp. ascendens). The latter has smaller blossoms and shorter petioles at the flowers.
