Etymology:
   Carex:   carere = missing (seeds are missing at the upper male spike of many species)
   atherodes:   ather = briste-eared
 

Carex atherodes is a very rare sedge of Northeast Germany, which e.g. is still occurring in few moors in Brandenburg. In the north-eastern neighboring countries to Northern Asia, it is partly more common.
