Etymologie / Etymology:
   Carthamus:   korthom (arab. ) = färben / korthom (arab. ) = to dye
   tinctorius:   Färber / dyer
 

Die Färberdistel stammt aus Asien, und wurde bzw. wird im ganzen Mittelmeergebiet als Nutzpflanze angebaut, da man aus ihr einen gelben bis roten Farbstoff gewinnen kann. Die Pflanze auf den ersten Bildern entwickelte sich überraschend in einem Balkonkasten, der unter einem Futterhaus steht, wo im Winter Vögel gefüttert werden.

The Safflower is originated from Asia, but cultivated in the whole Mediterranean in order to obtain its yellow to red colorant. The plant of the first photos appeared surprisingly in a flower box on our balcony, which is standing under a bird feeder for the winter.
