Euphorbia esula can be confused with the similar species Euphorbia virgata (also called Euphorbia waldsteinii)
and Euphorbia saratoi (longer time wrongly called Euphorbia pseudovirgata).
The small nectary horns of Euphorbia esula are short and blunt, while those of the two other species are long.
Also the leaves are different: Euphorbia esula has relative short leaves, of which the widest point is above the middle of the length.
At Euphorbia virgata the rather long leaves have their widest point near the base
and have adumbrated small peduncles at the laterally truncated base.
Euphorbia saratoi has long lineal, rather steadily wide leaves, with the maximum width in the middle of the length.
Euphorbia esula is mainly growing on meadows in the valleys of the big rivers (in German called 'Stromtalpflanze').
