Etymology: | |||
Oenothera: | oinotheris (Greek) = plant with wine smell at the roots
ersteinensis: | from erstein (Alsace, France)
The stem of Oenothera ersteinensis is tincted red over its whole length. The leaves are narrow. Often it carries a long white pilosity on its green parts. It's unknown whether the species is of American origin, or whether it is a hybrid which developed in Europe. In the region of Strasbourg (France, Alsace) and Kehl (Germany, Baden-Württemberg) it can be found in big populations, further northern in the Rhine Valley there are scattered occurrences. Oenothera ersteinensis has relative small blossoms.
