Etymology:
   Ononis:   Greek plant name, from onis = donkey
   spinosa:   spiny
   antiquorum:   old-world (here: Mediterranean and Middle East)
 

While the leaves of the Central European Spiny Restharrow Ononis spinosa are about three times as long as wide, those of the Mediterranean subspecies Ononis spinosa subsp. antiquorum are considerably shorter, and sometimes extremely small. The subspecies can, but it needen't, be extremely thorny.
