Etymologie / Etymology:
Ornithogalum:   ornithos = Vogel, gala = Milch / ornithos = bird, gala = milk
   exscapum:   schaftlos / scape-less

Fig. 5).

At Ornithogalum exscapum the scape (stem below the inflorescense) is usually completely in the underground, i.e. the stalks of the individual flowers are in this case already starting on the ground (see e.g. Fig. 5). Rarely a smaller part of the scape is above the ground. The leaves of the species are 2 to 6 mm wide with a white central stripe (see Fig. 7). The filaments of the two petal circles under the pollines have different width at the base, about 2.5 resp. 1.5 mm, and are narrowing towards the anthers at the top (see Fig. 9). The ovary is angular at the top (see Fig. 9).
Ornithogalum exscapum occurs in Sicily, Italy, former Yugoslavia and Albania, as well as in Mainland Greece incl. the Peloponnese. The species does not belong to the Ornithogalum umbellatum agg. aggregate, but is closer related to Ornithogalum collinum and Ornithogalum gussonei, what specialists recognise by the inner structure of the bulb. Literature: SPETA, F. (1990), Ornithogalum gussonei TEN., O. collinum GUSS. und O. exscapum TEN., drei häufig verkannte, aus Italien beschriebene Arten
