Polygala vulgaris wird bis zu 25 cm hoch und besitzt keine Grundblattrosette. Die Stängelblätter sind wechselständig. Die Blüten sind häufiger blau als violett oder weiß. Die Tragblätter der Blüte sind eiförmig und deutlich kürzer als der Blütenstiel. Sie fallen leicht ab. Die Flügel (das sind die beiden breiten, zur Blütezeit farbigen Blütenblätter, die von ihrer Entstehung her eigentlich auch Tragblätter sind) besitzen neben der Mittelader eine verzweigte Aderung (siehe Fig. 12 und 41).

Polygala vulgaris grows up to 25 cm tall and has no basal leaf rosette. The stem leaves are alternate. The flowers are more often blue than violet or white. The bracts of the flower are egg-shaped and significantly shorter than the flower stalk. They fall off easily. The wings (these are the two broad petals that are colored at flowering time and are actually bracts in their origin) have branched veins beside the central vein (see Fig. 12 and 41).
