Etymology: | |||
Sagina: | sagina = feeding
apetala: | without petals
Sagina apetala is the rarest of three Sagina species without or with reduced petals, which occur in big parts of Europe. Sagina apetala differs from the much more common Sagina procumbens in that it grows erect. From the similar Sagina micropetala Sagina apetala differs in that the sepals of the fruiting plants are attached to the capsule, while in Sagina micropetala the sepals are protruding, as in Sagina procumbens, too. The awns on the rather short leaves of Sagina apetala are longer than half the leaf width, however, the awns at the tips of the leaves seem to fall off relatively easily at all three species.
