Sagina: | sagina = feeding
procumbens: | procumbent
Sagina procumbens is the most common of three Sagina species without or with reduced petals, which occur in big parts of Europe. Of the two other species Sagina micropetala and Sagina apetala which are growing upright, Sagina procumbens differs by growing lying or ascending. The awns at the tips of the relatively long leaves are short, however, these awns seem to fall off relatively easily at all three species. The four sepals of fruiting plants are similar and protruding. The sepals of Sagina micropetala are also protruding, but they are slightly different in pairs: The two inner sepals are somewhat narrower than the two outer ones, are hood-like at the outside, and also carry a small protruding tip in the beginning, which, however, seems to fall off relatively easily. Sagina procumbens is a perennial plant and, unless it is a seedling from the current year, has a much stronger root system than the annual Sagina micropetala.
