Etymology: | |||
Sorbus: | Roman name of the Service Tree Sorbus domestica, from sorbere = to slurp
collina: | growing on hills
Sorbus collina is a stabilized and hereditary-stable hybrid clan, which is assumed to have developed from Sorbus aria and the Greek Whitebeam Sorbus graeca. It is tetraploid. Sorbus collina occurs in Germany mainly in the mountains of the Franconian Alb, and moreover in Czechia and Western Austria. Because of its similarity with the Hungarian Sorbus pannonica it has formerly been called by this name or as Sorbus graeca s.l., until Sorbus collina has been described in 2015. The mentioned Whitebeam clans are differring slightly in their leaf forms.
