Etymology:
   Tephroseris:   ash, lettuce
   helenitis:   derived from a Greek plant name
   discoidea:   disk-shaped
   Senecio:   senex = old man (Greek)
   spathulifolius:   spatulate leaves
   pyrenaicus:   from the Pyrenees
 

Var. helenitis has yellow ray florets at the edge of the compound blossoms, at var. discoidea these are missing.
