Etymology: | |||
Viola: | Roman plant name
arvensis: | growing in fields
megalantha: | large-flowered
contempta: | despised | ||
Field Panies of subspecies megalantha have bigger flowers than normal Field Panies and tend to a violet dot on the upper petals. There are pure populations of the subspecies, but often there are only few big flowered between many small flowered ones, so some botanists won't accept subspecies megalantha. Moreover some of these botanists doubt the individuality of Viola tricolor because in some populations even these are occurring intermixed with Viola arvensis.
