This species is so unique and grows in such an unusual biotope, namely peat bogs, that it should actually be named as a separate species. However, it was never described as Dactylorhiza turfosa, only as subspecies Dactylorhiza majalis subsp. turfosa, and re-combined as subspecies Dactylorhiza traunsteineri subsp. turfosa.
