Etymology:
   Dactylorhiza:   daktylos = finger, rhiza = root
   wirtgenii:   Philipp Wilhelm Wirtgen (1806 - 1870), German botanist (WIRTG.)
 

In Natural.belges 77(9):105 and 80(12):103 Belgian orchidophiles are affirming, that they re-found in some Dactylorhiza hybrid populations from alcaline moors near Langres (Dept. Haute Marne, France) exactly the attributes of the orchid, which was described as Orchis (today: Dactylorhiza) wirtgenii by HÖPPNER in 1916 from Rheinland near Cologne (Germany).
