Leslie LEWIS, who re-found the orchid together with John SPENCER, wrote in April 2005:
... in July 2004 a friend (John SPENCER) and I re-discovered Epipactis cambrensis (C. THOMAS) 1950, now E. phyllanthes var. cambrensis (P.D. SELL) 1996.
Although this orchid is listed under E. phyllanthes in many books (including DELFORGE), as there had been no confirmed sighting since the publication of its discovery in 1950, doubts had been cast on its existence, especially as it had never been photographed.
However, our 2004 rediscovery of this orchid has now been confirmed by Professor A.J. RICHARDS, the Epipactis expert of the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI) after a detailed comparison with C. THOMAS's published description of E. cambrensis and the herbaria specimens which he deposited. Details of the rediscovery have been published in the Journal of the BSBI, Watsonia 25 (2005), pages 290-295 and in the April 2005 issue of the Journal of the Hardy Orchid Society (UK).
