Wolfram FOELSCHE recognized that most of the red flowering Nigritella, which are usually called Nigritella rubra or Nigritella miniata and which are wide spread in the Alps, don't match with Gymnadenia rubra, which WETTSTEIN described 1889 from the Rax-Schneeberg region in Nieder-Österreich soutwest of Vienna. So FOELSCHE decribed the clan, which is wide spread between the Western Alps and the Carpathians, newly as Nigritella bicolor in 2010 in J.Eur.Orch 42 (1): 31-82. However in between there is doubt at FOELSCHE's diagnosis, that bicolor and rubra are different. One reason is that he did his measurements only in single plants, which can have non-typical attributes, and not at a number of plants which is sufficient for statistical evaluation.
