Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   apifera:   bearing bees
   atrofusca:   dark brown

There are two quite similar variants of the Bee Orchid  Ophrys apifera, whose lip lacks the painted pattern (speculum). While the lip of Ophrys apifera var. fulvofusca is completely brown, and only the basal area is perhaps slightly lighter brown, in Ophrys apifera var. atrofusca at least parts of the border of the basal field are still preserved as a lighter pattern.
