Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Synon.:  Ophrys punctulata  RENZ

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:

L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   bilunulata:   two half-moons
   punctulata:   fine spotted

As H.F.PAULUS and M.HIRTH 2014 are describing in Jour.Eur.Orch. 46 (2): 233ff, based on new analysis of the herbary sheet LXIX from RENZ, printed in 1928 in Fedde Repert 25, Ophrys leucadica and Ophrys punctulata are different species. The real Ophrys leucadica is more similar to the Western Mediterranean Ophrys bilunulata, an endemism of the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca, and pollinated by Andrena fimbriata. The reason is that DEVILLERS & DEVILLERS-TERSCHUREN 2004 neo-typified such a blossom as Ophrys leucadica out of the heterogenous herbary sheet from RENZ, on which also blossoms of Ophrys punctulata are available which are slightly smaller. Ophrys punctulata is wide spread from Southern Croatia to South-East Greece and pollinated by Andrena flavipes. So the orchids shown here have to be called Ophrys punctulata now, or according to the proposal of PAULUS and HIRTH Ophrys bilunulata subsp. punctulata.
