Vorige Art/previous species (Left arrowball from Animation City 1991)     Ophrys oestrifera  M.BIEB.  s.l.     Nächste Art/next species (Left arrowball from Animation City 1991)

Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:
M.BIEB.:  Friedrich August Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein (1768 - 1826), German botanist
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
   oestrifera:   bearing Giant Horseflies

The names up to now used for the long-horned Ophrys of the Greek mainland, Ophrys oestrifera and Ophrys cornuta, will most probably not be matching, because Ophrys oestrifera is based on typus material from Crimea and Ophrys cornuta comes from Caucasus. Since in Greece several clans with smaller and bigger lips, earlier and later blooming time and other variations are existing, a number of new species descriptions has been written in the last years.
The Greek Ophrys bremifera with short horns has been described as Ophrys mycenensis in Jour. Eur. Orch. 42(3/4), 457 (2010), since the name Ophrys bremifera means a hybrid with Ophrys apifera according to recent research.
