Ophrys: | Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow

romolinii: | Rolando Romolini, Italian botanist (ROMOLINI)
In the French botanical magazine Le Monde des Plantes 96 (no.472, 2001):10-15 Romieg SOCA (Remy SOUCHE)
states, that MORETTI collected the plants, which he described as Ophrys bertolonii,
near Tortona in Liguria. Although botanists from MORETTI to NELSON considered all bertoloniiforme
orchids from Sicily to Liguria as the same species, from today's point of view one must say that
the name Ophrys bertolonii means the Northern Italian and Southern French orchids with
flat lip, which are here called Ophrys aurelia,
and not the orchids shown here, which grow in Central and Southern Italy, Sicily, as well as Southern Croatia.
The orchids with the bended lip shown here would then be nameless,
so SOCA described these as Ophrys romolinii.
The name honours the today's Italian botanist Rolando ROMOLINI from Firenze. |
