Ophrys bertolonii  MORETTI

Fam.:  Orchidaceae / Orchid Family

Synon.:  Ophrys romolinii  SOCA

Genus:  Ophrys  L.

Authors:
   MORETTI:  Giuseppe L. Moretti (1782 - 1853), Italian botanist
SOCA:  Remy Souche (alias Romieg Soca, 1951 - ), French orchid specialist
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals

Etymology:
Ophrys:   Greek plant name, from ophrys = eyebrow
bertolonii:   Antonio Bertoloni (1775 - 1869), Italian botanist (BERTOL.)
romolinii:   Rolando Romolini, Italian botanist (ROMOLINI)

In the French botanical magazine Le Monde des Plantes 96 (no.472, 2001):10-15 Romieg SOCA (Remy SOUCHE) states, that MORETTI collected the plants, which he described as Ophrys bertolonii, near Tortona in Liguria. Although botanists from MORETTI to NELSON considered all bertoloniiforme orchids from Sicily to Liguria as the same species, from today's point of view one must say that the name Ophrys bertolonii means the Northern Italian and Southern French orchids with flat lip, which are here called Ophrys aurelia, and not the orchids shown here, which grow in Central and Southern Italy, Sicily, as well as Southern Croatia. The orchids with the bended lip shown here would then be nameless, so SOCA described these as Ophrys romolinii. The name honours the today's Italian botanist Rolando ROMOLINI from Firenze.
SOCA's article lacks an English or Italian summary, and outside of France it has remained almost unknown, so we have to wait, whether and when this opinion will generally be accepted.
