In Mitt.Bl.Arbeitskr.Heim.Orch.Baden-Württ. 23 (1) 203 - 242, Brigitte and Helmut BAUMANN described in 1991 a hybrid clan between Orchis anatolica and Orchis quadripunctata, which occurs on Crete, on the East Aegean Islands, in the western Turkey and on Cyprus, as Orchis sezikiana. At some of the locations one or both parent species still occur so that backcrossing with parents also occurs there, at others not.
In 2024, the Cretan orchid specialist Antonis ALIBERTIS described the eastern Cretan occurrences of Orchis sezikiana, which grow there without the parents, as a new species Orchis diktaea. Since he neither cites the original description of Orchis sezikiana from 1991 nor lists it in the bibliography, ALIBERTIS apparently does not know the original description at all! In describing his Orchis diktaea, he seems to have relied solely on statements of Carel KREUTZ, without checking the facts himself. In my opinion this is a sloppy piece of work, that was adopted uncritically by the French orchid magazine L'Orchidophile 55 (3) (no. 242) in autumn 2024, which also there does not speak for accurate working methods! In my opinion, Orchis diktaea should be considered as a superfluous synonym of Orchis sezikiana.
