Der Malteserschwamm ist kein Pilz, sondern eine Pflanze, und kommt in Europa hauptsächlich an den Küsten des Mittelmeers vor. Er parasitiert die Wurzeln verschiedener salztoleranter Pflanzen, z.B. der Gattungen Atriplex, Suaeda, Salsola, und Tamarix. Er besitzt kein Blattgrün. Verschiedene Wissenschaftler sind uneinig über seine Stellung in der Systematik der Pflanzen, er ist aber auf jeden Fall primitiver als die Orobanchen und deshalb weit vor ihnen einzuordnen.

The Maltese Fungus is no fungus but a plant, and occurs in Europe mainly at the Mediterranean coasts. It is sponging the roots of various salt-tolerant plants, e.g. of genus Atriplex, Suaeda, Salsola, and Tamarix. It has no chlorophyll. Different scientists are discordant on its position in the botanical systematic, but in every case it is more primitive than the Orobanche and to be classified far in front of these.
