Dianthus legionensis wächst auf trockenen kalkigen Hochebenen im Landesinneren Spaniens. Beschrieben wurde die Art aus der Provinz Leon, sie kommt aber auch weiter südlich und östlich vor. Von anderen Autoren wurde sie als Unterart von Dianthus lusitanus, Dianthus scaber und Dianthus toletanus geführt. Die Unterseite der Blütenblätter ist grünlich.

Dianthus legionensis is growing on dry calcareous plateaus in the interior of Spain. The species was described from the province of Leon, but it occurs also more South and East. Other authors handled it as subspecies of Dianthus lusitanus, Dianthus scaber, and Dianthus toletanus. The bottom side of the petals is looking greenish.
