Fritillaria carica ist eine von mehreren gelben Schachblumen der ostmediterranen Region. Fritillaria carica kommt auf der griechischen Insel Samos und in der benachbarten Türkei vor. Von der dort ebenfalls vorkommenden Fritillaria bithynica unterscheidet sie sich unter anderem durch kleineren Wuchs von nur etwa 10 cm Höhe, blaugrünes Laub, gelbere Blütenfarbe und vor allem durch den rundlichen Querschnitt des Fruchtknotens, während der Fruchtknoten und die Samenkapsel der Fritillaria bithynica sechs Flügel tragen. Am Aufstieg zum Gipfel des Lazaros im Karvouni-Gebirge auf Samos liegt der Übergang zwischen den beiden Arten etwa in einer Höhe von 870 Metern, darunter wächst Fritillaria bithynica, darüber Fritillaria carica.
In der Untersuchung "Fritillaria species (Liliaceae) with yellow or yellowish-green flowers in Greece" (1996) der Biologin Georgia Kamari von der Universität Patras wurden die Pflanzen vom Gipfel des Lazaros noch als Fritillaria forbesii getrennt von Fritillaria carica geführt, aber neuere Florenwerke vertreten diese Auffassung nicht mehr.

Fritillaria carica is one of several yellow Fritillaria of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Fritillaria carica occurs on the Greek island of Samos and in the adjacent Turkey. It differs from Fritillaria bithynica which is also occurring there by e.g. smaller height of only about 10 centimeters, glaucous color of the green parts, more yellow blossom color and mainly by the roundish section of the ovary, while the ovary and seed capsule of Fritillaria bithynica are carrying 6 wings. At the ascent to the summit of Lazaros in the Karvouni Mountains on Samos, the transition between the two species is approximately at an altitude of 870 meters, below it Fritillaria bithynica is growing, above it Fritillaria carica.
In der investigation "Fritillaria species (Liliaceae) with yellow or yellowish-green flowers in Greece" (1996) of Georgia Kamari from the University of Patras the plants from the summit of Lazaros have still been separated from Fritillaria carica as Fritillaria forbesii, but later flora works don't opine this way anymore.
