Bei Kochs Zwiebel-Binse sind alle sechs Perigonblätter spitz und dunkelrot bis violettbraun gefärbt, während bei der Nominatsippe Juncus bulbosus die inneren drei Kelchblätter an der Spitze stumpf sind, und die Färbung der Perigonblätter heller ist. Die Blüten von Kochs Zwiebel-Binse besitzen sechs Staubblätter, die der Nominatsippe Juncus bulbosus nur drei. Die Frucht von Kochs Zwiebel-Binse besitzt eine aufgesetzte Spitze, die der Nominatsippe Juncus bulbosus nicht. Kochs Zwiebel-Binse wird allerdings nicht von allen Autoren als eigenes Taxon von Juncus bulbosus abgetrennt.

All six tepals of Koch's Rush are pointed and colored dark red to purple-brown, while the three inner sepals of the nominate clan Juncus bulbosus are blunt at the tip, and the color of the tepals is lighter. The flowers of Koch's Rush have six stamens, those of the nominate genus Juncus bulbosus only three. The fruit of Koch's Rush has an attached tip, while that of the nominate clan Juncus bulbosus does not. However, Koch's Rush is not separated from Juncus bulbosus by all authors as an own taxon.
