Die Echte Mispel Mespilus germanica ist ein kleiner Baum und gehört zum Kernobst, wie z.B. Äpfel (Malus), Birnen (Pyrus), Quitten (Cydonia), Mehlbeeren (Sorbus), Zwergmispeln (Cotoneaster), Weißdorn (Crataegus) und Feuerdorn (Pyracantha). Die Frucht ist essbar, wird aber heute kaum mehr genutzt, während es im Mittelalter in Mittel und Südeuropa einen umfangreichen Anbau gab. Da die Art schon sehr früh kultiviert wurde, kann ihr Ursprungsgebiet nicht sicher angegeben werden, man nimmt Gebiete in Osteuropa und Vorderasien an. The Medlar Mespilus germanica is a small tree and belongs to the Pomaceous Fruits, as e.g. Apples (Malus), Pears (Pyrus), Quinces (Cydonia), Mountain Ashes (Sorbus), Cotoneaster, Hawthorn (Crataegus), and Firethorn (Pyracantha). The fruit is edible, but today rather uncommon, while in the Middle Ages there was extensive cultivation in Central and Southern Europe. Since the species has been cultivated already very early, its original area cannot be specified surely, Eastern European and Western Asian areas are assumed. | ||
