Während bei der mitteleuropäischen Dornigen Hauhechel Ononis spinosa die Blätter etwa dreimal so lang wie breit sind, sind die der mediterranen Unterart Ononis spinosa subsp. antiquorum deutlich kürzer, und manchmal extrem klein. Die Unterart kann, muss aber nicht, extrem dornig sein.

While the leaves of the Central European Spiny Restharrow Ononis spinosa are about three times as long as wide, those of the Mediterranean subspecies Ononis spinosa subsp. antiquorum are considerably shorter, and sometimes extremely small. The subspecies can, but it needn't, be extremely thorny.
