Nach genetischen Untersuchungen von Schoenswetter et. al. (2009) sind die alpinen Verwandten von Papaver alpinum alle sehr nahe verwandt, sodass man sie mit ihm zu einer Art zusammenfassen, oder höchstens im Rang von Varietäten unterscheiden sollte. Das sind Papaver rhaeticum, Papaver ernesti-mayeri (MARKGR.) WRABER, Papaver kerneri, Papaver occidentale (MARKGR.) H.E.HESS & LANDOLT, Papaver sendtneri und Papaver victoris SKORNIK & WRABER .

According to genetic studies by Schoenswetter et. al. (2009), the alpine relatives of Papaver alpinum are all very closely related, so that they should be combined with it into one species, or at most distinguished by the rank of varieties. These are Papaver rhaeticum, Papaver ernesti-mayeri (MARKGR.) WRABER, Papaver kerneri, Papaver occidentale (MARKGR.) H.E.HESS & LANDOLT, Papaver sendtneri, and Papaver victoris SKORNIK & WRABER .
