Die spanische Epipactis cardina wurde erst 1998 von Benito Ayuso und Hermosilla beschrieben. Sie ist bisher nur von wenigen hoch gelegenen oder nord-exponierten Wäldern in Ostspanien bekannt. Die Statur der Pflanze ist gedrungener als die von Epipactis helleborine. Bei jungen Pflanzen sind die Blätter zweizeilig angeordnet. Stängel und Blätter sind stark rot überlaufen. Die Blüten sind helleborine-ähnlich, aber meist kräftig rot gefärbt.

The Spanish Epipactis cardina has been described not until 1998 by Benito Ayuso and Hermosilla. Up to now it is only known from few high or Northern exposed woods in Eastern Spain. The stature of the orchid is more compact than that of Epipactis helleborine. At young plants the leaves are arranged in two opposite lines along the stem. Stem and leaves are strongly tinted red. The blossoms are similar to the blossoms of helleborine, but usually coloured red.
