Dies war die einzige rotblühende Pflanze in einer größeren Population gelber Dactylorhiza markusii. Manche Leute halten solche Pflanzen, die im Norden Siziliens gelegentlich vorkommen, für Hybriden zwischen der stets gelben markusii und einer roten Dactylorhiza romana. Andere halten sie für eine rote markusii, deren Existenz die ersteren prinzipiell anzweifeln.
Dr. Wucherpfennig vertritt die These, dass Dactylorhiza markusii nichts anderes sind als Dactylorhiza romana Populationen mit Tendenz zu kürzerem Sporn. Folgt man dieser Theorie, so wäre dies einfach eine rote Dactylorhiza romana.

This was the only red flowering orchid in a bigger population of yellow Dactylorhiza markusii. Some people assume that this kind of orchids, which are occurring rarely in the North of Sicily, are hybrids between the always yellow markusii and a red Dactylorhiza romana. Others like to see a red Dactylorhiza markusii in it, while the first group of people doubts the existence of such a colour variant all.
Dr. Wucherpfennig advocates the thesis, that Dactylorhiza markusii are nothing else than Dactylorhiza romana polpulations with tendence to shorter spur. Following this theory this would just be a red Dactylorhiza romana.
