Carex halleriana can clearly be differed from similar Carex species by its "secondary stems": The stem has one or more additional female spikes, each of these is sitting on a peduncle of up to 20 centimeter length which originate at the base of the sprout. These spikes are looking similar to stems, but have no male spike, and the peduncles are thinner than the main stem. The species is growing at rather dry sites in Central European and Mediterranean mountain ranges. |
