Vorige Art/previous species (Left arrowball from Animation City 1991)     Carex nigra  (L.) REICHARD  s.l.     Nächste Art/next species (Right arrowball from Animation City 1991)

Fam.: Cyperaceae / Sedge Fam.

Genus:  Carex  L.

Carex nigra with its very large distribution area is very variable and generates local forms. According to the Flora Europaea this goes up to, for example, dwarf Carex bigelowii-like forms in some peripheral areas of the species. The depicted, somewhat untypical Carex nigra grows in large numbers on the edge of a pond between Sölk-Pass and Hornfeldspitze in the Wölzer Tauern (Central Austria) on crystalline substrate. Their spikes are significantly slimmer than those of typical Carex nigra.

Authors:
L.:  Carl von Linné (Linnaeus, 1707 - 1777), Swedish naturalist who introduced the binary naming system for plants and animals
REICHARD:  Johann Jakob Reichard (1743 - 1782), German physician and botanist

Etymology:
Carex:   carere = missing (seeds are missing at the upper male spike of many species)
   nigra:   black
bigelowii:   Jacob Bigelow (1787 - 1879), physician and botanist in the USA
