Mahonia x wagneri is a horticultural hybrid that originated in Europe.
The parents are both from North America, but from widely separated regions:
The Oregon Grape Mahonia aquifolium originates from the Northwest, from the US State of Oregon to Canada,
while the Shinyleaf Mahonia Mahonia pinnata is native in California in the Southwestern United States,
so that natural hybrids could not arise.
