Fam.: Orobanchaceae / Broomrape Fam.

Synon.:  Orobanche ramosa  L.  subsp. mutelii  (F.W.SCHULTZ) COUT.,  Orobanche mutelii  F.W.SCHULTZ

Genus:  Phelipanche  POMEL,  Orobanche  L.

Formerly such usually blue colored plants have been assigned to genus Orobanche. From other Orobanche they differ by additional narrow lateral bracts (bracteoles on both sides of the wider central bract) outside of the calyx tube. Therefore they have been recombined to an own genus Phelipanche.
Phelipanche mutelii is a parasite mainly on the Bermuda Buttercup Oxalis pes-caprae, which was introduced into the Mediterranean region from South Africa. It is also mentioned to parasitize plants of the Asteraceae and Apiaceae families among others, but one has to ask whether this is not at least partly due to confusion with Phelipanche nana, which was temporarily taken as synonym of Phelipanche mutelii.
