| Genus: Soldanella L. |
Soldanella montana and Soldanella major are the two large-flowered Snowbells that grow in acidic forests. The petioles of Soldanella montana are strongly glandular, while those of Soldanella major have short glands, at least when young. The basal cove of the leaves of Soldanella montana is deeper than that of Soldanella major, so that the basal lobes of Soldanella montana often overlap slightly. What both have in common is that the undersides of their fresh leaves are purple tinged, which may have faded in overwintered leaves by the time they bloom in spring. |
