The new species was described in 2019 from the Czech Republic, and has already in the following year been confirmed from many other countries, e.g. Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Ukraine, Greece, Italy, Austria, Germany (Aachen, Viernheim in Hesse), Northeast Spain and Mallorca. The most important distinguishing feature between Stellaria ruderalis and Stellaria media are the seeds of about 1,2 Millimeters diameter, which in case of Stellaria ruderalis have jagged tubercles at the edge, while the seed of about same size of Stellaria media has more rounded and flatter tubercles at the edge. Also other properties of Stellaria ruderalis are often larger and coarser than those of Stellaria media, so that Stellaria ruderalis can be seen as an intermediate between Stellaria media and Stellaria neglecta. Stellaria neglecta has bigger seed with jagged tubercles at the edge, while Stellaria pallida has significantly smaller seed.
