Etymology: | |||
Vitis: | Roman name of the grape
labrusca: | Ligurian term for the wild European grape, Linnée used the word as name of an American species
Like Vitis riparia, Vitis labrusca is one of the wild American wine species onto which European grape varieties have been grafted, since the grape phylloxera was introduced from America around 1863 which destroyed the roots of most European grape vines.
The grapes of Vitis labrusca are rarely used directly for winemaking, but are sometimes used as table grapes or for juice and jam.
In America and Asia, Vitis labrusca is also used to breed grape varieties for winemaking there.
