Alkanna orientalis kommt in der Ostägäis und dem Vorderen Orient vor. Lange Zeit wurde auch eine ähnliche, auf dem griechischen Festland und nahe benachbarten Inseln wachsende Alkanna mit stark welligen Blättern zu Alkanna orientalis gestellt, die dann von Karl Heinz Rechinger (fil.) als eigene Art Alkanna hellenica abgespalten wurde. Auch die recht neue "Vascular plants of Greece - an annotated checklist" (2013) schließt sich der Abspaltung an, während verschiedene andere Autoren sie nach wie vor zur Alkanna orientalis zählen.

Alkanna orientalis occurs in the Eastern Aegean and the Near East. For a long time, a similar Alkanna with strongly wavy leaves growing in the Greek mainland and nearby neighboring islands was also subsumed under Alkanna orientalis, which was then split off by Karl Heinz Rechinger (fil.) as a separate species Alkanna hellenica. Also the relatively new "Vascular plants of Greece - an annotated checklist" (2013) follows the split, while various other authors still classify it as Alkanna orientalis.
